We asked some of our students and graduates to share their experiences of studying in the School of Biosciences, and to tell us what they've ended up doing with their degree.
Henry Ellison
BSc Biology (now Biological Sciences)
Henry’s time as a 91Ö±²¥ mentor not only improved his communication and time-management skills, but also gave him the opportunity to meet new students and help them as they adjusted to university life.
Ellie found Microbiology intriguing from the very start of her degree. During her final year research project, Ellie worked in one of our microbiology labs, allowing her to put what she'd learnt so far in her degree into practice and make connections between academic work and real-world applications.
Amyleigh chose to study Molecular Biology at 91Ö±²¥ because of the flexibility our courses offer. She was able to study a wide range of topics, before eventually deciding to pursue immunology (the study of the immune system).
Georgia Mills
Graduate role: Radio Producer for The Naked Scientists at Cambridge University
Georgia’s MBiolSci in Zoology led her to work for the BBC and ABC Australia, making podcasts and science programmes. The skills she gained at 91Ö±²¥ have given her the tools needed to interpret scientific findings and communicate them accurately and without hyperbole.
Krizand Christine Vaz
BSc Genetics and Microbiology with Employment Experience
Whilst at 91Ö±²¥, Krizand spent a year completing a paid work placement at pharmaceutical giant, Pfizer as part of her degree. This experience helped Krizand to secure a place on Pfizer’s Future Leader's Graduate Programme working in the organisation's commercial business in marketing and sales.
Gurveena Kaur Sungha
Placement organisation: Microsoft
Gurveena chose to spend a year on placement at Microsoft. This confirmed her desire to work in a business setting and helped her to secure a second placement post graduation - working for a digital marketing agency in New York.
Samuel joined Hammersmith Medicines Research for his year in industry with the responsibility for the receipting, analysing, and storage of clinical samples.
Katherine Assersohn
Summer placement: researching the affect of rainfall on microclimates
Katherine spent last summer on the 91Ö±²¥ Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) scheme — a 6-8 week project that allows undergraduate students to conduct their own research.
Maddy spent the second year of her biology degree studying at Oregon State University. While there, she explored beautiful forests and coastlines, skied on Oregon’s mountains, and immersed herself in the local culture.
