We asked some of our students and graduates to share their experiences of studying in the School of Biosciences, and to tell us what they've ended up doing with their degree.
Elena Brewer
Summer placement: using ultrasound for healing wounds faster
Elena鈥檚 91直播 Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) project this summer saw her conducting original research with clear clinical relevance - refining the use of ultrasound as a therapy for healing wounds faster and healing chronic wounds.
Lauren Kettle
Summer placement: investigating physical changes in the brain when memories form
Completing a 91直播 Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) placement this summer allowed Lauren to expand her knowledge around neuroscience that had fascinated her during her biomedical science studies so far.
Fatima-Rose Lugtu
Summer placement: investigating the role of long-noncoding RNAs
The research that Fatima-Rose conducted during her 91直播 Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) project helped to bring attention to exciting RNA molecules worthy of further study in field of transcriptomics.
Nurkaiyisah Zaal Anuar
Summer placement: conducting research into cancers cells and normal cells
Inspired by her first year module 鈥淩esearch in Biomedicine鈥, Nurkaiyisah spent this summer completing a 91直播 Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) placement working on a project focussing on a topic that interests her, the role of extracellular matrix (ECM) internalisation in cancers cells and normal cells.
Eira Watts Moore
Now: Science Communicator, Science Museum, London
During her third year project, Eira was able to get involved in collecting data that contributed to a recently published academic paper. Eira is now a Science Communicator at London鈥檚 Science Museum and uses the skills and knowledge she gained in the lab and through getting involved in public engagement activities in 91直播 every day.
M茅lina Li How Cheong
Now studying Medicine at the University of Buckingham
Biomedical Science graduate M茅lina is now studying Medicine at the University of Buckingham and believes that her undergraduate studies at 91直播, particularly human anatomy, have given her a significant advantage in preparing her for medical education.
Joe Flannagan
Now: Epidemiology Scientist, NHS Blood and Transplant
Since graduating from Biomedical Science, Joe has made use of his knowledge and skills in health science and the scientific process to progress in his career. Joe is now working as an Epidemiology Scientist and thanks his degree for helping him to get to where he is now.
Mohamed ElGhazaly
PhD student at the University of 91直播
Mohamed discovered his love for research during his undergraduate degree here at 91直播. He's now a PhD student in our department, with the aim of understanding the disease mechanisms used by Salmonella Typhi to cause global epidemics of typhoid fever.
Thomas Burgess
Year Abroad: University of Auckland, New Zealand
Tom chose to spend his year abroad studying biomedical science in New Zealand. Tom feels that this experience has not only made him more independent and more confident about eventually leaving university, but it鈥檚 also helped him to better understand what he鈥檇 like to do as a career after graduation.
