We asked some of our students and graduates to share their experiences of studying in the School of Biosciences, and to tell us what they've ended up doing with their degree.
Alexandria Rowland
BSc Biomedical Science with a Year Abroad
Alexandria chose to spend a year studying abroad in South Korea. This year has helped Alexandria to get a grasp of how different countries have different philosophies in teaching and research.
Lucinda Wellman-Smith
BSc Biochemistry with a Year in Industry
Lucinda is spending her placement year working for consumer goods company, Reckitt within Global Regulatory Affairs. Lucinda has loved how many opportunities there have been within her role and has been surprised by how much she's been able to achieve in such a short space of time.
Melissa Wei Yi Tan
MBiomedSci Biomedical Science with a Year in Industry
Melissa spent her industrial placement year at Hammersmith Medicines Research (HMR) working as a Student Biomedical Scientist. This experience allowed her to learn about different parts of the lab and a valuable insight into clinical trials.
Ioanna Bezirtzoglou
BSc Biomedical Science with a Year in Industry
Ioanna spent her industrial placement year working for healthcare giant, Roche, in a non-lab science-based role. Ioanna was able to shadow teams and work on projects that interested her whilst being pushed out of her comfort zone to pursue her own personal and career development.
Hannah Setter
BSc Biomedical Science with a Year Abroad
Hannah chose to spend a year studying abroad at Florida International University in the USA as part of her biomedical science course. Hannah wanted to get the typical 'American college experience' and has spent her year immersed in college life.
Thanks to the practical research experience that she gained on her course, Katherine is now beginning life as a PhD student at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology. Katherine believes that studying Biomedical Science 91Ö±²¥ was one of the best decisions that she has ever made.
Emily Gordon
BSc Biomedical Science with a Year in Industry
Emily spent her Year in Industry at pharmaceutical giant, Roche, working as an Associate Statistical Programmer in early phase clinical trials. During her placement, Emily visualised data to enable a range of stakeholders to assess whether a drug is safe and effective, ultimately contributing to the drug development process.
Cordelia Heath
BSc Biomedical Science with a Year in Industry
Cordelia chose to spend a Year in Industry in order to give her a better idea of what she would like to do after university. During her time at healthcare giant Johnson and Johnson, Cordelia worked with surgeons and other healthcare professionals who she feels will form valuable parts of her professional network after graduation.
Katherine started working at the Oxford Vaccine Group shortly after graduation, putting her skills and knowledge into practice helping to set up and deliver paediatrics vaccine clinical trials. It was this Group that led the monumental effort to deliver the Oxford/ AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccine Clinical Trial which resulted in the vaccine being deployed globally to protect against the SARS-COV2 virus and Katherine became a key part of his work.
Zara chose to study biology at 91Ö±²¥ because of the broad range of modules available which gave her lots of opportunities to develop skills in the lab and the field. Zara has now begun her teacher training with Teach First and hopes that by sharing her passion for the subject, she'll inspire some of her pupils to pursue a career in science.
