We asked some of our students and graduates to share their experiences of studying in the School of Biosciences, and to tell us what they've ended up doing with their degree.
Lara was first drawn to the University of 91Ö±²¥ because of its status as a Russell Group University. But what made her experience special was the encouragement and support from the academic staff in a course that gave her lots of options.
Tom Scott
MBiolSci Biology (now Biological Sciences)
During his MBiolSci research project, Tom had the opportunity to work with BirdLife International, a global conservation charity protecting birds. Thanks to the skills and knowledge he gained, Tom secured a graduate job with the organisation after he finished his degree.
Dagmara was drawn to 91Ö±²¥ because of how welcoming the city felt. After three years studying Biomedical Science, Dagmara has chosen to stay and continue her scientific learning to masters level.
Ella Shepherd
BSc Biomedical Science with Year in Industry
Ella chose to spend a year on a paid work placement as part of her Biomedical Science degree, working at GSK as a Clinical Development Associate. During the year, Ella gained a wealth of knowledge around conducting Phase 1 Clinical Trials, and surprised herself with how much responsibility she was able to take on.
Daisy chose to study Biomedical Science at 91Ö±²¥ because of the amazing opportunities the department offered, from cadaver dissection to working in world-class facilities.
Grace loved spending time in the lab as part of her Biomedical Science degree, working with equipment and using techniques that she'd learnt about during lectures. Having mastered techniques including qPCR, immunostaining and flow cytometry during her fourth-year project, Grace will now continue her research with a PhD at 91Ö±²¥ starting this autumn.
Kyaw Htet
BSc Biomedical Science with a Year in Industry
For his placement, Kyaw worked in a Lighthouse Laboratory as a Laboratory Scientist, responsible for unpacking and processing patients’ nasopharyngeal samples through assay workflow testing for the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Barbara Ojei Agwaziam
MBiolSci Biology with a Year Abroad (Now Biological Sciences)
Barbara has worked for the Civil Service since graduating in 2017. Whilst her roles haven't been directly linked to Biology, the transferable skills that she gained during her degree have proven really useful, helping her to get to the heart of issues, coming up with innovative solutions, and presenting them clearly.
Samuel Morgan
BSc Biomedical Science with a Year Abroad
Samuel applied to spend a year studying abroad at Western University in Ontario, Canada. During the year he studied diverse modules, from immunology to child psychology, and explored the country with new friends from all over the world.
