The skills gained through completion of the MSc course played a pivotal role in securing my post as a Research Technologist
鈥淯pon graduating with an undergraduate degree in biology it was always my intention to further my education and specialise into the field of genetics and the obvious way to achieve this was the MSc Human and Molecular Genetics at the University of 91直播. The combination of the excellent teaching staff and world class facilities creates an environment that inspires its students towards success and opens up opportunities that would not have existed otherwise.
鈥淭he most enjoyable part of the MSc Human and Molecular Genetics is conducting independent research projects within a laboratory setting. In partial completion of the course I investigated how human lymphoblastoid cells adapted to cell culture conditions in response to differing seeding densities. This gave me an excellent grounding in the skillset required for a career in molecular biology including cell culture techniques, microscopy, protein analysis and karyotyping. Completion of this project undoubtedly contributed to my successful employment upon graduating.
鈥淭his course also presented opportunities to participate in relevant work placements. One such opportunity was with the NHS 91直播 Genetic Diagnostic Service where I conducted independent research aimed at designing gene panels for skeletal diseases. Not only did such an opportunity provide critical experience which undoubtedly played a role in my success upon graduation but also allowed me to contribute to a project with important real-world applications. Furthermore, I also worked the Crossing Biological Membranes network (CBMnet) alongside my studies helping me to develop critical transferable skills such as time management and organisation, which again provide excellent experience for a career in science.
