From BSc Zoology to a career in genomics
"I have always wanted to pursue a career in biosciences but didn’t know the right path for me, and during my Zoology BSc at the University of 91Ö±²¥ I developed an interest in genomics and its applications to human health.
"The Human and Molecular Genetics MSc interested me as the course offers a diverse range of laboratory training and an independent research project, alongside an opportunity for a placement at 91Ö±²¥ Diagnostic Genetics Service (SDGS) that could be hugely beneficial for a career in genomics.
When searching for jobs after my degree, I frequently had to present my masters research to potential employers that were often blown away by the quality of our training and knowledge."

MSc Human and Molecular Genetics
"During my year on the course, I was amazed at the wide scope of laboratory techniques we learnt and were able to apply through lectures to health care and disease. For example, during our first few weeks we completed a CRISPR-Cas gene edit and in the second semester I completed a research project aiding diagnosis of peroxisomal disorders alongside SDGS. Considering that prior to the MSc I had very little genetic laboratory training, this work was fundamental in securing me a job in a genetic laboratory.
"When searching for jobs after my degree, I frequently had to present my masters research to potential employers that were often blown away by the quality of our training and knowledge. I was offered a job at the Francis Crick Institute in London where I am starting a position as a Laboratory Research Scientist that involves assisting in setting up a new laboratory and contributing towards research into the Hepatitis B virus.
"There’s no doubt I would not be in the position I am in without this MSc and incredible training I received from Dr Dave Turton and Dr Adam Hodgson, for which I am extremely grateful."
