This short half-day course will provide attendees with the basic theory, skills and confidence to facilitate their own qualitative research focus groups. It includes background theory on focus groups, discussion on what the benefits and challenges are, consideration of practical issues and the steps you should consider taking before, during and after running a focus group. 

Who will benefit from the course?

This course is designed to benefit anyone who wishes to set up, deliver and analyse a qualitative focus group. It is aimed at those who have not worked with focus groups previously, including postgraduate students (Masters or PhD) or those with a similar level of experience.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand the benefits and challenges of using focus groups
  • Choose an appropriate type of focus group 
  • Select a suitable method for analysing your focus group data
  • Have a basic awareness of the relevant key issues including recruitment and withdrawal, consent, recording methods, analysis methods,, ethical issues, data management, project management and safeguarding and dissemination.
  • Set up and run a qualitative focus group with research participants

Requirements:

Reliable and stable internet connection. A PC or laptop Webcam and microphone (preferably a USB headset) Preferably a quiet room where there will be no/minimal disruption. Ability to access Google applications (e.g. Google Docs, Google Sites, Google Sheets).
