Addiction research
Our research plays a central role in current policy and public debate. In particular, our 91Ö±²¥ Alcohol Policy Model has provided a key evidence base for debates around minimum unit pricing, brief interventions and low-risk drinking guidelines in the UK and internationally.
Decision modelling
Our work focuses on various aspects of health economics and decision modelling to address healthcare and health policy issues.
Key areas of work include economic evaluation, decision modelling, health technology assessment (HTA), health policy analysis, research methodology, and disease modelling.
The group's cost-effectiveness analyses have significant policy impact, informing healthcare decisions and resource allocation.
Epidemiology
The epidemiology research theme provides a platform across the School of Medicine and Population Health, and beyond, to bring together those interested in improving population-level health through the better characterisation of disease and the refining of preventive measures and treatments, whatever their discipline.
In doing this, we facilitate the development, uptake, and continued use of robust methods and best practice to bridge the gap between the research and operational environments and prevent and reverse negative health outcomes.
Evaluation, real-world evidence and knowledge into action
The theme activities are underpinned by an applied and theoretical concern to increase understanding of the adoption and implementation of research evidence into clinical practice, local government commissioning and to influence public health policy.
Our mission is to increase the coproduction of knowledge in order to accelerate the adoption of research findings across all stages of the research process (pre, during and post research).

Evidence synthesis and retrieval
We have an international reputation in information sciences, evidence synthesis and modelling methodologies and we deliver a number of evidence synthesis programmes including SCHARR-TAG, our NIHR Evidence Synthesis Group (EnSygN), the NIHR Public Health Review Team and the NIHR Health and Social Care Delivery Evidence Synthesis Centre.
Health economics and econometrics
Our Health Economics and Econometrics group is focused on methodological research in economic evaluation and statistical analysis of observational and retrospective datasets. Additionally, a significant aspect of our work involves conducting applied economic evaluations encompassing health economic evaluations alongside clinical trials, decision analytic modelling and national health policy evaluations.
Outcomes
Our Outcomes group is focused on measuring and valuing health, quality of life and wellbeing, particularly for use in health technology assessment. They specialise in the development of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) that measure the health and quality of life of people for particular conditions or populations.
