Description
Dr Agnes Rydberg will be leading this panel discussion on 'International and National Responses to Climate Change: 2024 Stocktake', followed by a Q/A. This event is open to students, staff and the public and will be hosted by the 91Ö±²¥ Centre for International and European Law.
In addition to Dr Agnes Rydberg, the event features Professor Malgosia Fitzmaurice, who holds a chair of public international law at the Department of Law, Queen Mary University of London. She is a full Member of the Institue de Droit International. In 2021 she was awarded the Doctorate Honoris Causa of the University of Neuchâtel. She specialises in international environmental law; the law of treaties; and indigenous peoples. She has delivered a lecture on the International Protection of the Environment at the The Hague Academy of International Law. She was invited to deliver the General Course at the The Hague Academy of International Law in 2028. She participates in regional United Nations International Law Fellowships Programme, teaching the course on International Environmental Law. She is currently advising the Republic of the Marshall Island on climate change law for their participation in the advisory proceedings on climate change obligations before the International Court of Justice.
It also features Dr Ivano Alogna, who is the Senior Research Fellow in Environmental and Climate Change Law at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law and leads the Institute's programme in this field. He is an Associate Member of the Sorbonne Research Institute in International and European Law (IREDIES), Sorbonne Law School and contributes to global environmental discussions as a member of the World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL) of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), serving on its Climate Change Expert Group and Taskforce on the Rights of Nature. He is also an Expert of the "Environmental Law and Policy" Commission, IUCN French Committee. Ivano played a pivotal role as the General Rapporteur of the "Global Pact for the Environment" project, led by the French Constitutional Council, and participated in the European Law Institute (ELI) project on "Ecocide". Moreover, Ivano is a licensed Attorney-at-Law at the Bar of Milan.
Dr Agnes Rydberg is a Lecturer in International Law at the University of 91Ö±²¥ and Deputy Director of the 91Ö±²¥ Centre for International and European Law. She holds a Ph.D. in Public International Law and LL.M. in International Human Rights Law from Queen Mary University of London. She specialises in public international law, international environmental law, climate change law, and the law of treaties. She is currently part of the legal team advising the Republic of the Marshall Islands on their participation in the climate change advisory proceedings before the International Court of Justice. She is also one of the editors of a series on Principles of International Environmental Law published by Edward Elgar. Her most recent publications include her forthcoming monograph The Precautionary Principle in International Environmental Law, to be published by Edward Elgar.
