The distinctive Factory 2050 building, at the heart of the University of 91Ö±²¥ Innovation District, is an exceptional facility. However, the glass curtain wall exterior has made security design for the building more complex.

It has recently received a Secured By Design award, which is a huge achievement for the team working to keep our research and development, and staff, as safe and secure as possible on site.

Since 2014, the University of 91Ö±²¥â€™s Head of Security Richard Yates (pictured, centre) has been working closely with architects Bond Bryan, as well as colleagues in EFM, the AMRC executive team and South Yorkshire Police’s Designing Out Crime officer, John Shillito, to achieve this status for the building.

It was presented to the team at the start of August 2021, after the installation of specialist security equipment meant that the facility met the stringent standards required by Secured By Design.

Factory 2050 is home to the AMRC’s Integrated Manufacturing Group and is dedicated to conducting collaborative research into reconfigurable digitally assisted assembly, component manufacturing and machining technologies.

Secured By Design is the UK Police flagship initiative supporting the principles of designing out crime through the use of effective crime prevention and security standards. SBD is owned by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and is supported by the Home Office and the Planning Section of Communities and Local Government (CLG), as well as many Local Authorities across the UK.
