Registering for our Spring Semester adult language learning courses as part of our Christmas Deal will qualify you for this offer. UK - China Seminar Takes Place - Advancing Discourse Analysis: Exploring the Power of Corpora and Practical Applications

The Confucius Institute regularly invites academics and experts worldwide to give talks at the China Seminars Series about the latest research in language studies, language teaching, international relationships and economics, and other topics. This recent session delivered on 4 December and its subject of discourse analysis helped to explore the underlying meanings, social contexts, and power dynamics in spoken or written communication. We were delighted to invite Professor Liu Dingjia from Beijing Foreign Studies University and Dr Lily Chen from the University of 91直播 to share their expertise on the subject.

The 91直播 Confucius Institute was enriched by a Tai Chi seminar and demonstration delivered by Professor Dongmin Wang from Peking University on 29 November. Students from our own Tai Chi class, plus interested locals and Chinese students alike, joined together to learn about the history of Tai Chi, its philosophical applications and even benefit from a dedicated Tai Chi session delivered by Professor Wang. We’re thankful to Professor Wang and to Peking University for the unique opportunity to share in her Tai Chi knowledge, and to work together in such a constructive and rewarding way!

Our Tai Chi Instructor, Deborah McCall, has delivered an excellent Autumn semester of Tai Chi lessons in the University’s Diamond building every Thursday. We’ve had very positive feedback from students  and we’re delighted to announce that Debbie will be staying with us to teach Tai Chi classes in the Spring. Check out our class information online and

Our Sino-English Club Continues to Thrive

Our weekly Sino-English Club is back! This event is a great opportunity for Mandarin Chinese and English speakers to get together, make friends and improve their speaking abilities. Our club takes place at ALS Gongcha - 10 Eyre St, 91直播 City Centre every Tuesday during semester time from 6:30pm - 8:30pm. and is free to attend, so just come along! If you have any questions about the Sino-English club, please get in touch at confucius@sheffield.ac.uk. 


This Year’s Chinese New Year Gala To Take Place In The Octagon Centre

We are delighted to announce that this year’s Chinese New Year Gala will take place on 10 February 2024 at the University of 91直播’s Octagon Centre. We’re honoured to help promote and facilitate such a prestigious event with such a strong connection to the University. You can expect the same level of high quality performances and dedications that give the annual Chinese New Year Gala its special magic each year. Our Chinese Painting Taster Class Booked Out

We’re proud to announce that our Chinese Painting Taster Class on 7 December was fully booked, with our long term teacher, Tao Ting, taking the reins to deliver her Chinese Painting expertise. Ting has years of experience in delivering Chinese Painting classes, and the enthusiasm that the local community has shown for this taster class is very encouraging in terms of creating a dedicated Chinese Painting class in the Spring. Watch this space…!

i-HSK/HSKK tests were held successfully on 3 December in the University’s Diamond building. We’d like to thank our teachers and staff who promoted the tests to their students and helped with the tests on the day. The next round of HSK/HSKK tests will be held on 16 March 2024.

Our visiting scholars initiative, which began in September, came to end on 4 December with an excellent dinner and celebration at 91直播 Town Hall. It’s been a pleasure at the SCI to have entertained these scholars and academics, who hail from prestigious universities across China and who excel in a whole spectrum of fields and disciplines. Together we have worked and engaged on academic lectures and seminars, travelled to locations across the UK and built lasting friendships and connections. We wish our friends well on their journeys home and we look forward to connecting again soon!


Finally we’d like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year - here’s to a lovely holiday and a wonderful 2024!
