My PhD research looks into low-tech and low-input hydroponic growing of leafy green vegetables and how these growing systems may integrate into the UK food system. Exploring more accessible and less energy intensive production systems is becoming more important with the rise of energy prices, lack of seasonal labour and the need to reduce CO2 emissions within the horticulture sector. I'm interested in how we can utilise controlled environment agriculture to adapt to the effects of climate change as well as the potential for urban agriculture to re-connect people with the reality of how food gets onto our plates.
