Sustainable food production for an expanding population is essential for the elimination of hunger and malnutrition. The reduction of disease associated crop losses is an important facet in achieving this aim.
My research focuses on a fungal pathogen of wheat; Zymoseptoria tritici. Spanning a variety of disciplines, we utilise the power of pioneering atomic force microscopy, to answer fundamental biological questions on how the fungal cell wall is structured, what it is composed of and how this facilitates function.
This understanding can then be exploited to tackle a major constraint to maximising agricultural output.
