Profile

Dr. Marieke Meesters is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Department for Sociological Studies. In collaboration with Prof. Dr. Esther Turnhout (University of Twente, NL) and Dr. Eva Giraud, Marieke critically examines the role of human bodies, in particular human excreta, in agricultural and natural life cycles. To follow this research journey, you can sign up for the monthly substack newsletter filled with fun poo-stories through https://substack.com/@shittosoil

In her doctoral research at Wageningen University, Marieke developed the term "posthumanist participation" to rethink natural resource management, challenging liberal individualist human views and the notion of natural resources as mere utilities by studying mining and dredging in the Dutch Wadden Sea. In her free time, Marieke passionately works on creating a vibrant living environment at home, fostering a habitat for a range of beings, from thermophilic bacteria to human bookworms.
