“When I was younger, during one of my classes in secondary school, I watched a documentary about a doctor who went to other countries to provide healthcare to those without proper access to it,” recalls Tobias Tan, from Singapore. “Coincidentally, around that time, I remember my mother sharing with me stories about missionary doctors. It was then when I felt something clicked inside of me and ever since I’ve worked towards studying medicine.”

“I chose this university for a few reasons. 91ֱ�� has a large international pool of students. It has given me the opportunity to meet many people from all walks of life and at the same time feel at home with a large community of Singaporeans and Malaysians,” he explains. “Also, 91ֱ�� is very safe. We have the Peak District in our backyard, which is a huge perk. I could go on but there are too many things I like about 91ֱ��!”

“I think to be able to apply what I’ve learnt to help people is the most rewarding”, he says, explaining what he enjoys most about studying medicine. “Hearing patients share their stories about doctors who have made a difference in their lives inspires me. This pushes me on to become a better doctor so that I will be able to help those in need.”

In his spare time, Tobias enjoys socialising in the University’s award-winning students’ union. “The students’ union is so full of life and full of warmth, and everyone there is really welcoming. There are always new things going on, a variety of food choices, and it’s a nice place to just relax. Western Bank Library is one of my favourites as well. It’s very spacious and quiet, with a nice view of Weston Park whenever your eyes need a break.”

When I graduate, I would like to stay in the UK to work if I am granted the chance to, as there are a lot of opportunities here. I believe this would be a good place to start my dream of doing mission work as a doctor, as there have been countless of talks and sharing from other inspiring doctors who have done likewise.
