Profile

I am a public health consultant with a keen professional and personal interest in food systems and their wide range of impacts on population health.

I earned my Master鈥檚 in Public Health (MPH) with distinction at the University of Nottingham in 2008. I worked in multiple public health organisations in various roles, including as a public health intelligence analyst and as a senior QA advisor for adult-non-cancer screening programmes. In 2015 I joined the Public Health Specialty Registrar Training Programme.

After passing professional exams, in January 2017 I became an honorary lecturer and assessment tutor in public health at ScHARR. Later that year I joined the TACLED and DFC research projects, both led by Professor Michelle Holdsworth. This research focused on exploring dietary environments, and drivers of food choice in urban settings of Ghana and Kenya. I was particularly involved in the workstream that engaged with national experts and senior policy makers in each country to benchmark existing national food policy, and to recommend and prioritise new policy related to non-communicable disease.

In 2018 I became a founder and Chair of the Faculty of Public Health Food Special Interest Group. This group aims to promote issues and action to support the many links between food systems and public health, and to provide information and expertise and support work in this area.

Also in 2018, I became a Grantham Scholar and began my PhD studentship. Currently I am studying part-time, have successfully passed my confirmation review, and anticipate submission of my thesis no later than 2026. The topic of my PhD is 鈥淩educing red and processed meat consumption in men in lower socioeconomic population groups in the UK鈥.

Research interests

My interests are in the overlap between food systems and population health. This includes healthy and sustainable food systems; the impact of food policy and food environments on population health; population approaches to obesity; taking a public health approach to food insecurity; and interventions to increase consumption of healthy, sustainable diets without exacerbating health inequalities.

More broadly my interests span a wide range of public health issues including health effects of loneliness and social isolation; resource use across the full healthcare pathway associated with frailty; and the macroeconomic determinants of health.

Teaching activities

I am an assessment tutor for the public health module within Phase 3a of the MBChB programme.

I teach on the Nutrition in the Global South module (Master鈥檚 level); on the AMR course (Master鈥檚 level); and deliver ad-hoc lectures related to sustainability and public health.
