Profile

I am a Senior Health Economist specialising in decision modelling and economic evaluation. I joined the School of Medicine and Population Health in October 2017 as a Research Fellow in Health Economics. I work within the Policy Research Unit in Economic Methods of Evaluation in Health and Care Interventions (EEPRU).

Following the completion of my PhD in health economics at the University of 91ֱ�� in 2012, I worked as a health economist at both the University of Newcastle and the University of Manchester Division of Dentistry.

My work focuses on developing decision models in the areas of breast cancer screening and kidney failure. Notably, my research on breast cancer screening has played a pivotal role in influencing policy discussions between the National Screening Committee and the Department of Health and Social Care regarding the potential future reorganisation of the England Breast Cancer Screening Programme.

Currently, I serve as the Principal Investigator on an EEPRU project that assesses the health-economic impact of incorporating artificial intelligence for breast cancer detection within the Breast Cancer Screening Programme. I also work in clinical trials and often collaborate with 91ֱ�� Clinical Trials Research Unit. Recently completed and ongoing trials:

Intensive therapy for moderate established rheumatoid arthritis (TITRATE trial, completed 2021),
Robot-assisted radical cystectomy vs open radical cystectomy for patients with bladder cancer (iROC trial, completed 2023)
Pre-implantation trial of histopathology in renal transplant allografts (PITHIA trial, completed 2024).
Delivering effective non-invasive ventilation in motor neuron disease using intensive remote support (DENIM trial, started 2024)
Early parenteral nutrition vs standard nutritional care following emergency laparotomy. (TONIC trial, started 2024)

Teaching interests

I am an active supervisor and am interested in supervising research students in the areas of decision modelling for health economic evaluations and cost-effectiveness in clinical trials.

I supervise two PhD students: Asghar Meerza and George Tarun.

I teach on the module "Valuing the Benefits of Health Care" in the MSc Health Economics and Decision Modelling (HEDM) course. I also provide dissertation supervision to HEDM students.

Professional activities and memberships

I am a member of the Yorkshire and North East Regional Advisory Committee for the NIHR Research for Patient Benefit Programme.

I serve as an advocate for neurodivergent individuals within the faculty which includes persons with conditions such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and other developmental or learning disorders.
