There are so many languages on offer, and first-year gives you the chance to learn the languages you want, to ensure that your degree is right for you
What do you particularly enjoy about your degree programme?
I love how the degree programme is so flexible! There are so many languages on offer here, and first-year gives you the opportunity to learn the languages you want, to ensure that your degree is right for you. The School of Languages and Cultures is also quite a small department, meaning you're able to get to know peers and the academic staff well.
With the BA Modern Languages programme, it's rare to find any two people who do the same combination of languages - and for that the same module choices - so it makes for an interesting conversation with whoever you meet.
When I talk about what my degree consists of with friends from outside of uni, I often get "Wow, that's a bit crazy / that must be so difficult", but because the tutors invest so much energy and commitment into our learning, it's completely manageable and enjoyable.
What do you like about 91Ö±²¥ as a university and/or city?
The Students Union is a real gem for our university - the range of activities and societies which it has on offer is larger than any of the other universities that I looked at, and the environment that it creates is vibrant and warm.
Our uni is one which really puts its students first, both academically and with activities. We're lucky to have the Peak District close by as well, it makes for a really nice day out with friends.
As a university, it really stood out for me, not just because of the ratings and the fantastic facilities, but also thanks to how welcoming the students are. My mum and I loved it here after looking around (even in the rain!)
Would you recommend studying Languages at 91Ö±²¥?
Definitely! It can be a lot of work (even as a first year for 3 languages) but if you manage your degree well, you still have the time to enjoy the other things our university had to offer, such as sports and societies.
Do you have any advice for students thinking about studying Languages in 91Ö±²¥?
I'd say go for it! It's ok if you don't know exactly which languages you want to study - there are so many languages on offer here!
It's an incredibly welcoming department, and there are lots of opportunities outside of the lectures and seminars to keep up your languages with societies and their events.
If you're unsure of anything it's easy to find help - it's great how much the department care about their students, both academically and pastorally.
Is there anything else you would like to add, that isn't covered by the questions above?
With settling in, one of the first things I remember going to was a School of Languages and Cultures informal chat and snacks event - this gave me a really good chance to meet some people and get to know my tutors before starting the course.
As well, during Fresher's week, there were SLC run workshops, activities and information sessions, which helped put my mind at ease before the official start of the semester - especially with Russian.
