Students of German in Years 12 and 13 in the UK are invited to submit their translation of the original short German text below. Only one translation per student is permitted.

As stated in the blurb of the novella, Contrapunctus 鈥渟heds unsparing light on the lives of Indigo, Rutha-Pong, Habibi and Olaudah 鈥 four Afro-Germans, who, at the turn of the century in Berlin, come to terms with the colonial remnants of the city, their relationships and the racist tendencies of German society鈥.
In this extract, Indigo discusses her immigration from Ghana to Germany as a child; she reflects upon her realisation that her life in Ghana is a thing of the past, as well as some of the challenges that she experienced when attending a school in Berlin.

In solchen Augenblicken kommt die Kindheit einem hoch wie Sodbrennen. Ich schaue aus dem Fenster auf die Gleise der Hochbahn raus, wo die U2 alle paar Minuten vorbeirattert, beruhigend monoton in einer Stadt, in der nie irgendetwas v枚llig still h盲lt und die einem die Sehnsucht nach ein bisschen Wiederholung in die Zellen treibt.
Die Sonne scheint und bringt den gelben Putz unseres Hauses in Accra zum Leuchten. Ich knie auf dem R眉cksitz eines Taxis und schau zur眉ck. Ich heb die Hand zum Abschied. Bye Dad! Der Guardian schiebt das Tor zu unserem Grundst眉ck zu, als sei鈥檚 ein Vorhang und das Theaterst眉ck beendet. Applaus! Wir biegen unter einem Schild ab, auf dem ein Flugzeug abgebildet ist und ich frage mich, wann ich wohl das n盲chste Mal mit meiner Granny zum Markt gehen kann und was ich dann einkaufe.
Ich war nicht bl枚d als Kind. Ich wusste, dass das der richtige Augenblick war, 眉ber Dinge nachzudenken, die bis dahin normal gewesen waren. Ich wusste, dass ich meinen n盲chsten Marktbesuch wahrscheinlich als Touristin erleben w眉rde, und das Zeug, das ich im Kopf in meinen Einkaufskorb packte, war genau das, was ich in den Taschen der Touristen auf dem Markt in Accra gesehen hatte.
Insgesamt fiel mir das Leben in Deutschland leichter als meiner Schwester. Ich lernte, wie ich mir in der Schule Respekt verschaffen konnte, riss b眉schelweise Haare aus, wenn meine Mitsch眉lerinnen mich wegen meiner Hautfarbe h盲nselten, schlug Nasen blutig und w盲lzte mich mit Jungs im Dreck. Und ich kapierte, dass ich bei meinen Klassenkameraden einen guten Stand hatte, wenn ich im Erdkundeunterricht beim Thema Afrika meinen Lehrern widersprach und ungefragt und stundenlang 眉ber meine Oma in Ghana schwadronierte.

The prize
The authors of the ten best entries will each receive a prize of a 拢25 Amazon voucher and an invitation to take part in a special Translation Workshop organized by the School of Languages and Cultures at the University of 91直播, involving French academics, Masters students in Translation Studies and alumni who work in translation-related fields. The Workshop will be held online in January 2024.
The judges
The translations will be read and judged by a panel of German experts from the School of Languages and Cultures at the University of 91直播.
How to enter
The competition is open to students of German in Years 12 and 13 in the UK. Please translate the text above by Michael G枚tting. Translations should be the original work of individual students and should be uploaded via the . You must complete the form AND upload your entry via the link on the form or your entry may not be considered.
Winners will be notified by Wednesday 13 December 2023.
A fair copy of the translation, based on the best entries, will be available on this website in January 2024. Unfortunately, we cannot provide feedback on individual entries.
