Terry Eagleton, formerly Thomas Warton Professor of English Literature at Oxford and now Distinguished Professor of English Literature at Lancaster, is arguably the UK’s most influential contemporary literary and cultural theorist.
He has written over 40 books, including such academic classics as Literary Theory: An Introduction, The Ideology of the Aesthetic, and The Illusions of Postmodernism.
He has also published a play about Oscar Wilde, the script for Derek Jarman’s film Wittgenstein, and the novel Saints and Scholars, which features among others Nikolai Bakhtin, elder brother of the famous Russian thinker Mikhail Bakhtin and – it is often claimed – an important influence on Ludwig Wittgenstein.
Among Terry Eagleton’s most recent books are How to Read Literature and Culture and the Death of God.
