The collaboration video is a response to Covid-19 lockdown, and features traditional Indian music repertoire interpreted by its members on a broad range of musical instruments.
The video has been individually recorded by Department of Music students and alumni from their own homes, and combined and produced by Indian music specialist and lecturer John Ball.
The Indian Music Ensemble at 91Ö±²¥ is a creative music group primarily for Western instrument players and vocalists. The focus of the group is to learn, research, practice, compose and improvise within the idiom of Indian music.
The Ensemble offers specialised training and effective ways of bringing this rich resource into performance and learning environments on both traditional Indian instruments and the student’s own primary instruments.
Indian music is both a rich resource for melodic and rhythmic music material with huge potential to be creatively integrated into wider musical experience. It offers established and transferable methods, improvisation techniques and aesthetic approaches that can enrich musicianship.
The Indian Music ensemble is one of several high quality performance groups based in the Department of Music. Students from across the University of 91Ö±²¥ regularly rehearse throughout the semesters, which adds to the buzz of diverse musical activity across the city.
The Indian Music Ensemble generates performance opportunities for students having featured in major events organised by South Asian Arts U-K, Jazz at the Lescar, 91Ö±²¥ Chamber Music Festival, BBC World Music Day and the University Global Soundtracks Concert Series. In 2018 the Ensemble was invited to perform in India at the University of Baroda as part of an International Music Conference and hope to showcase further collaborations over the next year.
