Profile

Prof Szymik studied mathematics and philosophy in Göttingen and wrote his dissertation (Dr. math.) in Bielefeld. After assistant and visiting positions in Bochum, Bielefeld, Düsseldorf, and København, he moved to Trondheim, where he was a professor from 2018. He has also been invited to research stays at MIT, Harvard University, the Hausdorff-Institut in Bonn, Stanford University, the Mittag-Leffler Institute in Stockholm, the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge, and Oxford University. In 2022, he joined the School of Mathematics and Statistics in 91Ö±²¥. His research focuses on symmetries in algebra, geometry, and topology.

Research interests

Prof Szymik's research revolves around symmetries in topology, geometry, and algebra. He uses homotopy theory and homological algebra, representation theory and K-theory to understand groups and their generalisations. These methods have applications far beyond the study of symmetry: they have been used in data and computer science (topological data analysis, homotopy type theory, and topological quantum computing). On the theoretical side, he is currently thinking about knot theory and analogies with number theory.
