Modelling Mixing Mechanisms
Modelling Mixing Mechanisms is an EPSRC Established Career Fellowship awarded to Professor Ian Guymer to lead the transition from simplified 1D modelling approaches to more robust residence time distribution (RTD) based descriptions of flows with low turbulence, complex 3D shapes and unsteady flows.

Project description
Mixing effects in channels and pipes of uniform geometry can be represented with confidence in highly turbulent, steady flows. However, in the majority of water systems, the standard 1D model predictions fall short because of knowledge gaps due to low turbulence, 3D shapes and unsteady flows.
This Fellowship works to address the knowledge gaps, delivering a step change in the predictive capability of 1D water quality network models.
