Mode of delivery Face to face (During Covid this has been remote) 15. Background to the programme and subject area This proposal arose from an NHS mental health workforce need and the development of a new role, Clinical Associate Psychologist. Many mental health services struggle to recruit at all levels of the workforce. There is an identified need to increase psychologically informed practitioners and a recognition that many psychology graduates would like to work in the area of mental health, but are unable to get on the highly competitive Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. In response, the British Psychological Society (BPS) and NHS employers are looking to develop the role of a clinical associate psychologist (CAP). Draft Standards for the accreditation of a CAP MSc are being developed by the British Psychological Society and an application by NHS Trusts for a CAP degree apprenticeship (level 7) has been submitted with the aim of these beginning in Sept 2019 /Jan 2020. One CAP programme in SW England began in September 2018. NHS Trusts in Yorkshire and the Humber have expressed an interest in the CAP apprenticeship scheme and it is therefore timely to develop this training programme. The programme aligns with the departments and University strategies of improving the employability of its graduates. 16. Programme aims MSc Clinical Associate in Psychology (Adult) aims to:A1Provide opportunities for trainees to develop the competencies articulated in the CAP Apprenticeship Occupational Standards and the BPS standards.A2Support the development of knowledge and skills for trainees to manage their own learning and development.A3Support the development of knowledge and skills for trainees to conduct clinical research or service evaluations.A4Provide opportunities for trainees to practice autonomously with appropriate support and working within their scope of practice.A5Provide opportunities for trainees to develop the knowledge and understanding of high quality, evidence based psychological interventions to inform practice.A6Develop trainees critical knowledge and consideration of theoretical and practical issues which are central to the CAP profession.A7Develop trainees knowledge and understanding of the wider social context in which Clinical Associate Psychologists work. 17. Programme learning outcomes Knowledge and understanding On successful completion of the programme, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:Links to Aim(s)K1Contemporary theory in clinical psychology and related fields, including knowledge of health, disease, disorder and dysfunction, theories and evidence concerning psychological development and psychological difficulties in adulthood, and their assessment and formulation.A1K2A range of psychological assessment methods, including formal procedures, systematic interviewing and other structured methods and how to use this information to develop formulations and psychological interventions.A1K3The professional and ethical value base including that set out by the BPS Code of Ethics and Conduct, the BPS Division of Clinical Psychology Professional Practice Guidelines and (for research) the BPS Code of Human Research Ethics.A2K4The scope of practice in line with the employers requirements around conduct and ethics and governance policies.A2K5Applied clinical research and service evaluation methods.A3Skills and other attributes On successful completion of the programme, students will be able to:S1Appraise the theoretical foundations and appropriateness of a psychological intervention.A1S2Assess individuals and carers using a variety of approaches and methods and analyse outputs from specialist psychological assessments.A1S3Demonstrate competence in the development and use of formulation using a range of sources of information and psychological models.A1S4Demonstrate psychological intervention skills appropriate for an adult population working under the supervision of a practitioner clinical psychologist, on the basis of a psychological formulation, wo.king collaboratively with individuals, couples, groups, or carers A1S5Design and implement effective relapse prevention strategies and plans.A1S6Implement evaluations of practice, including awareness of psychometric theory and practice-based research methods at individual and service level.A1S7Communicate effectively clinical and non-clinical information from a psychological perspective to a variety of audiences.A1S8Develop and maintain an ethical and professional base.A2S9Work as a reflective practitioner, including monitoring own fitness to practice and wellbeing and taking steps to address any limitations or concerns.A2 S10Keep accurate, comprehensive and comprehensible records in accordance with applicable legislation, protocols and guidelines.A2S11Conduct service evaluations and contribute to their enhancement.A3S12Understand research ethics and be able to apply them.A3S13Use applicable techniques for research and academic enquiry, including quantitative and qualitative approaches.A3 18. Learning and teaching methods The programme will employ a model of adult learning. Trainees will be required to critique the research literature, work in small group discussions, reflect on their clinical work and respond to academic feedback on coursework. Most teachers will be required to be a registered mental health professional, such as an HCPC registered clinical psychologist, CBT therapist etc. A proportion of teaching will be undertaken by specialist clinicians working in the NHS and some by specialist educators. Facilities will be a teaching room for 20-25 and 2 break out rooms (each room to accommodate 6 people) for 2 whole days a week. Teaching that does not involve confidential materials will be recorded and available for trainees. Trainees will have their own confidential space on Blackboard where course materials, teaching notes and other resources will be placed. Learning technology will also be used to create a learning community and more independent learners. Assessments will be submitted through Blackboard and the portfolio and required apprenticeship documentation will be maintained on PebblePad Students will be assigned a personal/academic tutor who will hold regular meetings to support trainees learning and pastoral needs. Teaching will contain clinical skills based learning where trainees will have the opportunity to practise and gain feedback from fellow trainees and teachers. 19. Assessment and feedback methods Assessments are one of the fundamental foundations of the programme and aim to fulfil several important functions. First, assessment provides a system of standard setting whereby trainees are judged whether their academic and clinical performance is worthy of the award of an MSc from the University. It also serves a crucial role of professional gatekeeping to ensure that patients are not exposed to incompetent practitioners. The assessment strategy is designed to ensure that trainees successfully completing this programme can be shown to meet the standards set out by the British Psychological Society and the Institute for Apprentices. The principle of the programme is the integration of academic knowledge with its application within fieldwork or practical settings. Essentially, trainees who pass the MSc will be examined and have been judged to demonstrate at least adequate competence within all the following areas: 1) The application of psychological knowledge to clinical practice; 2) Knowledge and understanding of professional issues; 3) Clinical competence and professional conduct of a Clinical Associate in Psychology and 4) Research ability. Areas 1, 2 and 3 will be assessed mainly on the basis of Clinical Practice Reports, the Observed Structured Clinical Assessment and the Assessments of Clinical Competence (ACC), the Portfolio and End Point Assessment. Consideration of professional aspects of practice is integral to each and all of these assessment processes. Area 4 will be assessed via the applied clinical research project. 20. Programme structure and student development This is a new training programme developed for a new NHS workforce, Clinical Associate Psychologist. The programme will be accredited by the British Psychological Society and will also adhere to the apprenticeship standards. Trainees will be NHS employees and will spend 3 days of their week on placement. Two days a week will be spent in the university. Teaching will be between 9.30am and 5.00pm and will be mandatory. Outside of university semesters trainees will spend 4 days a week in their clinical base and one day a week study time (approx. 15 days) The programme will comprise: Module 1: The Social and Healthcare Context (20 credits) Module 2: Assessment, Engagement and Formulation (20 credits) Module 3: Psychological Interventions (20 credits) Module 4: Applied Clinical Research (30 credits) Module 5: Clinical Practice (70 credits) Module 6: End-point Assessment (20 credits) All modules will need to be passed for conferment of the award (180 credits in total). A second opportunity will be given to pass a failed assessment. Normally no further opportunities will be offered. As this is a professional training programme, no flexibility or intermediate awards are offered. The End Point Assessment can only be taken on successful completion of all other assessments. All elements of the programme relate to the (draft) standards of the British Psychological Society and the Office for Apprenticeship knowledge, skills and behaviours of Clinical Associate in Psychology.Detailed information about the structure of programmes, regulations concerning assessment and progression and descriptions of individual modules are published in the University Calendar available online at HYPERLINK "http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/calendar/" \h http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/calendar/. 21.
