Akanni’s journey began as a shop steward and was followed by his appointment to several positions, such as Chairman of the Young Workers’ division National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), President of NUPW, member of the Caribbean Congress of Labour (CCL), the Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations (CTUSAB), Public Services International (PSI), President of the Caribbean Public Services Association (CPSA) and the Barbados Social Partnership. He has practical experience in dispute settlement, grievance management, and collective agreements. His PhD focus in the Work and Employment Relations Research Centre will provide him with an opportunity to continue to be a catalyst not only within higher education but also within the Trade Unions in the Caribbean.

Akanni’s research interests are around trade unions and how technology can be used within the movement (e.g., enhancing member services and attracting younger generations of trade union members) and strengthening awareness of trends within the field. Also, to further the understanding of the drivers of and barriers to adopting digital technologies in trade unions in the Caribbean. His goal is to contribute to the overall mission and purpose of the movement; and shaping workers' policy in the Caribbean. His past and current experiences have prepared him tremendously to serve in these capacities.
