Shuangfa's current research interests include entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainability within the context of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups. He is interested in examining the factors that contribute to the growth, innovation and sustainability of small firms. For example, some of his works examine how the motivation of entrepreneurs influences organisational behaviour (i.e. entrepreneurial orientation and ambidexterity) that, in turn, affect venture performance; how the composition of the founding team affects the growth potential of the new venture.
Shuangfa's research has been published in various academic journals including International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behavior and Research, Journal of Business Research and Small Business Economics, amongst others.

Shuangfa is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has taught business venturing, new product development and entrepreneurial development modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
His teaching is based on three principles: learning partnership, experiential learning and active learning.
He believes it is important to establish a learning partnership with students and to involve them in learning design to ensure the learning activities are aligned with their needs and interests. The alignment can enhance student motivation and contribute to effective learning. He also believes experience is a key source of learning and development. It is essential to provide students with opportunities to go through the experiential learning cycle, such as gaining first-person experience and then reflecting on their learning and development. Moreover, he believes in active learning in terms of engaging students as active participants in the learning process. For example, the teaching sessions should be more interactive to increase engagement from students.
