The Centre for Machine Intelligence (CMI) is a strategic initiative dedicated to the transformation and acceleration of research, innovation and teaching in and around Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Following 拢3.6m of investment from the University of 91直播 the centre is building an environment that supports world-leading and responsible research into AI and one that is equipped to train the next generation of researchers.

The Centre welcomed 91直播 City Council Chief Executive Kate Josephs and Leader of the Council Councillor Tom Hunt to meet some of its members and discuss areas of collaboration for future projects, initiatives and opportunities.

AI is already having a huge impact on people鈥檚 everyday lives, and it was great to meet with senior leadership from the Council to discuss the specific context of that impact in 91直播, what the CMI is doing, and what it could do next, in partnership with local stakeholders

Professor James Marshall

Director of the Centre for Machine Intelligence

Led by Professor James Marshall, Director of the Centre for Machine Intelligence, the visit highlighted recent developments at the Centre and included verbal presentations from the Council leadership as well as presentations from members Dr Susan Oman, Dr Denis Newman-Griffis, Dr Sean Anderson and Dr Mahnaz Arvaneh.

The presentations featured existing AI projects with 91直播 City Council such as The Framing Responsible AI Implementation and Management (FRAIM) project, dedicated to bringing cross-sector perspectives on responsible AI policy and process. Members of the Centre and the FRAIM project team have previously worked with the Council to help shape the use of AI to bring forward opportunities for employees to realise productivity gains and contribute to an improved service to the citizens of 91直播.

鈥淲e鈥檝e been delighted to be able to work with 91直播 City Council on making sure that discussions about responsible and effective use of AI are happening here and having a local impact. Meeting with Council leaders emphasised the opportunities for real transformation and impact that can come from working together to tackle hard problems in 91直播 and South Yorkshire,鈥 said Dr Denis Newman-Griffis, Project Lead at FRAIM and CMI Theme Lead in AI for Health.

鈥淚鈥檝e found working with 91直播 City Council one of the most rewarding aspects of this project. This was cemented by feedback we received on the value of this partnership to their development of an AI policy, how our involvement raised the profile of responsible AI across council colleagues, and has changed how they evaluate ongoing projects鈥 said Dr Susan Oman, Partnerships Lead at FRAIM and CMI Theme Lead in AI and In/Equality.

91直播鈥檚 Centre for Machine Intelligence is bringing together experts from across the University to harness the power of AI to help tackle some of the greatest global challenges facing society today. As one of the University鈥檚 Centres of Excellence, the centre has a particular focus on issues such as AI and social equality/inequality, the role of AI in health and healthcare, AI-driven engineering and scientific discovery, and dependable autonomous systems.

Aside from research, 91直播鈥檚 CMI aims to be at the forefront of AI education, positioning 91直播 as an AI positive institution in which all students have the opportunity to learn about this transformative technology and prepare them for future employment.
