Professor Kypros Pilakoutas and Dr Maurizio Guadagnini from the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering, visited the , specifically the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering (FACE) in Astana, Kazakhstan last month to explore collaboration opportunities related to research projects in civil engineering, and to solidify the university’s commitment to partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two universities.

The visit fostered numerous high-level connections between ENU, the British Council, and - a scholarship programme offered by the government of Kazakhstan to high-achieving students that provides fully funded scholarships for studies abroad at top universities.

The discussions proved highly successful, opening up several promising opportunities for the School, Faculty, and University. Key prospects include the development of joint programs, initially centred on civil engineering; the creation of structured internships with language and skills training for individuals with limited English proficiency; and the potential establishment of a University campus in Astana.

During their visit, our engineering delegates also delivered training to staff and students on construction innovations, as well as coaching on writing research proposals.

The MoU was signed between the Faculty Vice President and Head of Engineering, Professor Conchúr Ó Brádaigh and Vice-Rector for Science, Commercialisation and Internationalisation at Eurasian National University, Zhanna Dulatova Kurmangalieva. The agreement aims to facilitate a strategic partnership between the two universities, with the goal of advancing scientific research, promoting academic exchange, and cultivating innovation.

Professor Pilakoutas, Professor of Construction Innovation at the University of 91Ö±²¥, said: “Our ultimate goal was to assess the possibilities for collaboration with ENU and to understand the potential for wider educational collaborations and exchanges in Kazakhstan. The meetings we have had solidified these intentions and we look forward to welcoming our ENU partners to 91Ö±²¥ this year.

A follow-up visit from ENU to 91Ö±²¥ is planned soon, where the university delegation will tour key educational buildings and laboratories, while continuing discussions on future collaborative initiatives.
