I have taught at the University of 91直播 since 1997 and have always worked part time. I have combined my teaching with my work as a solicitor at Howells Solicitors in 91直播.
I work at the University of 91直播 part time, three days a week. I work at Howells Solicitors in 91直播 two days a week.
I qualified as a solicitor in 1986. I did my articles in a small general practice in Bloomsbury and since 1987 I have specialised in the area of criminal litigation. I conduct criminal cases from start to finish. I regularly attend and advise people who are interviewed in the police station after they have been arrested or attend as volunteers. I represent people who appear before the magistrates court. I conduct bail applications and trials in the Magistrates Court. Most of my work is Legally Aided.
I was a member of the CPLE (Centre for Professional Legal Education) at the University of 91直播 until 31 August 2020. I taught students on the Legal Practice and Graduate Diploma in Law courses. In addition I taught criminal law and advanced criminal law to undergraduates and taught on the Investigating Vulnerabilities Offences course.
I am the Director of the Miscarriages of Justice Review Centre (MJRC) at the University of 91直播. The MJRC is a pro bono project. Student volunteers work in groups and advise 鈥渃lients鈥 who have been convicted of crimes they say they have not committed. The students are searching for new evidence to support an application to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) for their client鈥檚 case to be reviewed. I oversee the work of the students and advise them on legal and practical issues.
I am an external examiner at UCLAN and Birmingham City University
