The university does not overload you with work, so you have plenty of time to engage in other activities such as societies. Not one week is ever the same.

What made you want to take a History MA degree? and why did you choose this programme at 91Ö±²¥ particularly?
I was attracted to the range of modules you have and how the department had specialists in several fields. The academics at 91Ö±²¥ made Global History really appealing as each week you cover a different theme within the field of Global History. As someone who did not study their undergraduate degree at 91Ö±²¥, this was attractive to me as it allowed me to engage and get to know the Department better. Another thing that was attractive was how the department has a wide range of specialists. There is going to be at least one person focusing on something you like! This is really helpful when it comes to the dissertation as you are spoilt for choice on who to choose to supervise you.
What has your experience been like so far? and what are you particularly enjoying about studying your MA programme here?
It has been a really positive experience. There is always someone at the university which can help me if I am in need. Everyone is really warm and welcoming. The university does not overload you with work, so you have plenty of time to engage in other activities such as societies. Not one week is ever the same. The seminars are always engaging as seminar leaders try different teaching methods and activities each week.
What modules are you taking? and what are you enjoying about these and/or what are they adding to your knowledge, skills, experience from your BA?
During my first term at 91Ö±²¥, I took a module on the Vietnam War. That was really fun and engaging as you covered different aspects of the war. You delve into a bit of military, cultural, social and diplomatic history. So there is something for everyone. During my second term, I studied the Japanese East Empire. I did not think I was going to enjoy this as I thought it would be all about the Japanese Empire during the interwar period. However, we ended up covering a range of topics such as why the Japanese wanted and Empire and wanted to expand to how the Japanese Empire viewed knowledge and power. A module that I am particularly looking forward to is the Research Presentation as I get to present my dissertation idea and it is formed as a conference. This would definitely help me in later life on how to present myself and communicate effectively but also give me a feel of what academia is like as I would like to go into academia one day.
What advice would you give to others considering postgraduate study?
Spend time researching for the right MA course. There are a range of courses and every one has a different thing to offer. When choosing your modules, choose a range. You never know what you are going to like.
Do you have plans for after graduation?
I am going to go look for some work. Maybe something in the civil service department. I thought it would be cool to work in a museum as you are always around history and curating different exhibitions. I want to eventually do a PhD one day but I think it would be best to have some work experience. This also gives me time to research and read up on the field I want to do a PhD in.
What skills and experience will you be taking away from your degree and how do you think this will help you in the future?
The communicative and presentation skills. I think these skills are imperative for work one day. With every job you will need to know how to present yourself and come across well spoken and convincing.
