Much of the work we undertake with partners in this sector is focused on civil or dual-use applications, such as enhancing manufacturing processes, improving sustainability, and stimulating economic growth. This underpins our strategic partnerships with government and companies working in the areas of aerospace, manufacturing, engineering and energy. 

Our research and collaborations with the defence sector drive transformative research across the University, and have consistently accelerated innovation in a range of areas, such as new materials, light-weighting, recyclability, new methods of inspection, digital technologies, automation and robotics, smart tools and visualisation. 

At the University of 91Ö±²¥, we believe that it is unrealistic to expect a future world without the national defence sector. The defence sector supports the UK’s security, economy, employment and technological leadership, while also enhancing its strategic and geopolitical standing. The sector directly and indirectly supports hundreds of thousands of high-skilled jobs in the UK across the manufacturing sector and the supply chain. 

Responsible research

All of our projects, especially those with dual-use potential, are subject to rigorous oversight, due diligence checks, and comply with the relevant aspects of the University’s Code of Ethics, national and international legislation, and with our own Defence and Security Framework. The Framework carefully assesses our research and innovation activities in defence and security, developing closer awareness and oversight of projects through the three lenses of partnership, purpose and readiness of research.

With a foundation built on academic freedom, we want to empower our academics to drive forward initiatives that push the boundaries of research, innovation and global impact. We assess our collaborations to ensure our research is rigorous and responsible, that we protect academic freedom, and ensure we remain aligned with our ambitions for research excellence.
