BA History with a Year Abroad
Emily spent a year at Utrecht University for her year abroad.

Why did you decide to study abroad?

I have always wanted to travel more, but have never really had the opportunity, so I thought studying in Europe for a year would give me a great chance to have weekend trips and day trips to European cities. I also thought that it would be a great opportunity to live in another country for a year, whilst being in a university environment so that I would still have a support network and be able to meet other people more easily.

What were your top 3 highlights whilst studying abroad?

1. King’s Day on April 27th (and King’s Night the day before!)
2. My Easter trip to Bratislava, Budapest and Vienna
3. Being able to take day trips to Amsterdam whenever I fancied it!

What would you say to someone who was unsure about spending a period abroad?

It is a big step and it’s normal to feel unsure, but in the end its so worth it! Its such an amazing opportunity to open yourself up to different experiences and grow in confidence, and you will learn so many things that you have never even considered before.

What is the one thing you wish you'd known before you left?

Relax! It’s impossible to be completely prepared, so don’t overthink it too much. Things will inevitably go a bit wrong (you will get lost in the train station when you arrive, or you’ll forget to bring an adapter) but these things are always manageable!

For students who will be arriving in 91Ö±²¥, what are your top recommendations for things to do and see in 91Ö±²¥?

Aside from taking advantage of the Peak District and all the amazing parks and outdoor spaces, I would recommend the museums. They’re all free and are great if you have an empty day, or even a couple of hours. I would also recommend going to Kelham Island – there are amazing pubs, cafés and markets to explore, and it’s definitely one of my favourite places in 91Ö±²¥!
