What is the Science and Engineering Foundation Year (SEFY)?

Being able to improve your maths and science, whilst developing essential study skills such as writing lab reports, are all reasons why SEFY is a solid career investment.

  • On successfully completing the Foundation Year you automatically progress onto year 1 of your chosen degree.
  • Support is provided at every stage through academic and group tutorials and wider University services.
Find out why the foundation year could be a great choice to kick start your student journey.

This specially-supported programme enhances your ability in maths, physics and chemistry (if required) and practical work so you will excel in year 1 of your degree.

It's taught by subject specialists and takes the essential elements from the A level syllabus, and enhances the curriculum with knowledge and skills needed for future study.

SEFY is taught on the university campus by academics that also teach on undergraduate degrees, using the same assessment styles as the degree programmes.

There are close links with each engineering discipline. Aside from maths and science, you will also complete interdisciplinary lab work and degree-specific group and individual projects, working with an academic specialist to achieve your goals.

SEFY provision is expanding nationally. Whether you are moving from FE to HE study, or you are no longer able to resit past qualifications due to changes in Government funding, this is an excellent opportunity to study science or engineering at degree level, at a world-class University.

Students tell us that this course is fundamental in their transition to becoming engineers and scientists of the future. We gain excellent feedback about the tutorial classes which clarify course content and assist learning, unpacking any challenges you encounter in your studies.
