Evidencing how the Covid-19 pandemic could impact the creative and cultural sector in South Yorkshire is the focus of a new survey created by the University of 91直播 and councils across the region.

We want to understand how the current situation is affecting the sector and then use the data to look at how the sector can be supported to recover.

Professor Vanessa Toulmin

Director of City and Culture

The aim of the survey is to create a snapshot of the immediate impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on festivals, venues, events and cultural organisations in 91直播, Barnsley and Rotherham.

Led by the University鈥檚 Director of City and Culture, Professor Vanessa Toulmin, the survey is looking to estimate the financial impact, changes to visitor numbers, and how organisations have adapted to deliver events in alternative ways.

Professor Vanessa Toulmin said: 鈥淭he region is home to a wonderful, eclectic mix of creatives, many of them small and independent, who all contribute to the vibrancy and individuality of South Yorkshire.

鈥淲orking with 91直播, Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham Councils, we want to understand how the current situation is affecting the sector and then use the data to look at how the sector can be supported to recover."

鈥淚 am confident that audiences will return to the region鈥檚 performance venues and festivals and, as a University rooted in the city, we want to do what we can to support that.鈥

Leanne Buchan, Head of Creative Programming & Engagement at Rotherham Council said: 鈥淢any of our artists and cultural organisations are small and fleet of foot relying on a great number of events and festivals throughout the year. This research will help to provide important evidence to build the case for additional support for one of the fastest growing sectors in the economy and prepare the sector for its vital role in the recovery and rehabilitation of our communities post Covid-19.鈥

The data collected will be aggregated and analysed by the University and shared with 91直播 City Council, Barnsley Council, Rotherham Council, 91直播 City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and Arts Council England.
