Pursuing IP Law with a Sustainability Focus: My Academic Journey at 91Ö±²¥
- Why did you choose to study the International Intellectual Property Law and Sustainable Development module as part of your degree?
I chose the International Intellectual Property Law and Sustainable Development module because of my strong interest in intellectual property law. During my LLM journey, I was eager to explore how intellectual property intersects with broader societal challenges, and this module seemed like the perfect opportunity to delve into those complexities. I was particularly drawn to how intellectual property frameworks can influence innovation, technology transfer, and economic growth in ways that align with sustainable development goals. I wanted to understand how legal systems can be harnessed to balance economic interests with environmental preservation, and how intellectual property rights can support or hinder sustainable practices.
- What was the module about?
The International Intellectual Property Law and Sustainable Development module provided a critical understanding of how international IP frameworks, particularly the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs), intersect with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The module offered a solid technical foundation on how international IP rights are structured and regulated, and it also explored how IP law can influence areas like health, economic growth, innovation, and clean energy.
- How does it relate to or approach the topic of sustainability?
Notwithstanding the technical aspects, the module made it possible to examine real-world issues such as access to medicines, protection of traditional cultural expressions, and the promotion of green technologies. The focus was on evaluating how IP rights can strategically contribute to sustainable development. The instructors’ approach helped me gain the ability to apply IP law in practical ways to support sustainable strategies and to critically analyse case studies and real-life problems through this perspective.
- What did you like the most about the module?
What I liked most about the module was its practical relevance and interdisciplinary focus. It was not just about understanding legal frameworks like TRIPs, but about how IP law could be applied to solve real-world challenges, particularly in areas like environmental sustainability and global health.
- What did you learn?
The module encouraged me to think critically and creatively, allowing me to develop a better understanding of the relationship between intellectual property and sustainability. The discussions on issues like access to medicines and green technology were particularly engaging and gave me a deeper appreciation of the role law can play in shaping a more sustainable and equitable world.
- In your opinion, does Property Law and Sustainable Development play an important role within global sustainability discussions?
I believe law plays a crucial role in global sustainability discussions. IP protection, in particular, can either promote or hinder innovation in areas like sustainability, green technology, and access to essential medicines. For instance, patents can incentivise the development of eco-friendly technologies, but overly restrictive IP rights can also limit access to these innovations, especially in developing and least-developed countries. Balancing the protection of intellectual property with broader public interests is essential for achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, as sustainable development requires global cooperation, and IP law provides a legal framework that can be strategically used to foster innovation while ensuring that its benefits are shared equitably across borders. I think this intersection is critical to advancing both environmental and social sustainability globally.
Optional questions:
- What surprised you about the module?
What surprised me most was the extent to which intellectual property law intersects with so many aspects of sustainable development. Though I had anticipated learning about IP law in the context of innovation and economic growth, I was struck by how deeply it influences global issues like environmental protection, public health, and social equity. The module shed light on the complexities of balancing IP rights with the need for broader access to essential technologies, especially in the most vulnerable communities. This broader perspective was both unexpected and incredibly eye-opening for me.
- How do you think this module will help you in your future career?
The module has significantly helped shape my academic and professional direction. By deepening my understanding of the intersection between intellectual property law and sustainable development, it inspired me to pursue a PhD focused on this critical intersection. Whether working in academia, policy, or legal practice, the insights gained from this course will allow me to contribute meaningfully to discussions on innovation, sustainability, and global development. The ability to approach complex legal issues through a sustainability lens will be a valuable asset as I continue to explore the relationship between law, technology, and environmental justice.
