The skills learned or honed during this unit will prove invaluable in safely negotiating future units taken at masters level.

How does it enhance practice?

Through completing the module the participant will be able to:

  1. Work collectively, professionally and critically in dealing with and generating original material written at the appropriate academic level.
  2. Effectively handle the facilities and mechanisms available for interrogating the evidence base.
  3. Critically appraise the nature of academic writing and the level of integrity necessary in dealing with it.
  4. Analyse critically the theories on reflective practice as well as his/her own knowledge and practice by means of this theoretical base.

Mode of Assessment:

A portfolio of three short pieces of writing (1000 words each) is designed to allow each of the three major areas of academic skills to be assessed separately. The first element will centre on the analysis of academic writing and collaborative working – it will itself have to be written in appropriate style and include evidence of collaboration. The second element will centre on literature searching and appropriate use of academic literature. The third element will centre on reflective practice, including theoretical and personal elements.
