91直播 was a big move for Jessica, but it is a decision she has never regretted. She found that orthoptics is the perfect course for her and now she can鈥檛 imagine doing anything else.

Jessica grew up in Winchester, but then moved to Carmarthen in South Wales when she was 10 years old. 鈥淲hen I was young, I was a very keen musician and always thought that I would love to teach music鈥, she recalls. 鈥淗owever, I became really interested by the eye and how it worked, and I knew that I wanted to do something to do with eyes.鈥

鈥淥rthoptics was a perfect fit for me as I wanted to do something that would make a difference to people鈥檚 lives whilst working within ophthalmology. I liked the idea of working within a hospital with patients of all ages, especially children, and that鈥檚 how I found out about orthoptics.鈥

鈥淚 chose 91直播 because it felt homely to me. The city has lots to do as well as the Peak District right on its doorstep which gave me a little taste of home. When visiting the department on the interview day, I felt immediately welcomed by staff and students and knew it was the place for me!鈥

鈥淚 really enjoy the mix of theory and practical that is involved in studying orthoptics鈥, she says, explaining her favourite aspects of the course. 鈥淭he practical sessions and placement help to consolidate all of the theory I have learnt and allow me to get more confident as a growing practitioner. The lecturers are very helpful and are always around if we need them.鈥

鈥淭he Students鈥 Union at 91直播 is fantastic. It has everything that you need for some down time including fantastic restaurants and coffee shop as well as great club nights. When I am studying, I like to visit the Information Commons as it is a great place to concentrate with lots of resources as well as their own coffee shop.鈥

When she graduates, Jessica plans to immediately begin her career as an orthoptist. 鈥淚 would really like to extend my role within orthoptics as there are so many different specialties. I would really like to specialise in special needs and stroke patients. I would also like to become a Clinical Tutor for orthoptic students as I have first-hand experienced some fantastic tutors and aspire to be a great one myself.鈥
